Book Review

The realization that you’re simply not good enough to succeed in your chosen field, whether this involves reaching the top of the best-seller list or scoring goals for your country, must be one of the harshest lessons to learn. Yet, as the hero of ‘Love on the Pitch’ discovers, it doesn’t have to mean the end of the world, even though it might feel like it at the time. If this story has taught me anything, it’s that often we have to be knocked down before we can pick ourselves up again and uncover the talents we never knew we had.

Football is Warren Updegrove’s passion, the sport he dreamed of playing for a living. Therefore, when his coach lets him go after a single season in the NFL, he has no idea what to do with himself. In an attempt to drown his sorrows, he loses himself in alcohol, becoming increasingly depressed and out of shape. Warren’s one solace is Thom Lodge, his best friend with benefits. With his brand of sexy geekiness, Thom tutored Warren in Math during their college days and is now the only person Warren can truly confide in.

When a chance encounter at a party leads to Warren joining a gay rugby team, things begin to look up. He lands himself a job working for an online company that sells sporting equipment, and starts dating Victor Ragazzo, his devilishly handsome rugby coach. Yet, much as Warren is attracted to Victor, he is unprepared for the baggage he carries with him, and still feels as though something is missing in his life. He craves a relationship that goes beyond the physical, one that’s as easy as it is intimate. A relationship like the one he shares with Thom.

This is a highly entertaining read, unashamedly realistic, while managing to be romantic in a way that left me immensely satisfied. I enjoyed following Warren as his character developed, and I totally fell in love with Thom, unsurprising in view of the special place in my heart reserved for geeky types. In fact, I spent much of the book shouting at Warren to open his eyes and see what was right in front of him. This is the first novel by Neil Plakcy I’ve had the pleasure of reading, but I’m sure it won’t be my last.
