An ancient civilization long hidden from humanity is on the brink of chaos and war. Peaceful for thousands of years, the wolfkin clans are mysteriously losing packmates, kidnapped and killed by unknown foes.

The nightmare begins with an ambush by humans at a gathering of their kind, and lives are lost. Among them is Luca, youngest grandson of the two most powerful wolves in the Northern Clans. Thought long dead and gone, he is forced into a half-life, hidden in the far northern wilds of Canada and cut off from his kind. Those who raised him have no idea the creature they harbor in their midst, and name him Ghost. He begins to lose himself over the long years, and though he barely recalls his true name, the one wolf he never forgets is Kane.

Kane, Heir to the wolfkin clan Black Pine, is charged with hunting down the traitors who betrayed their kind to the humans. Years fly by, and more wolves are dying. He refuses to give up, and he vows to never again fail another of their kind, as he failed young Luca years before. His heart tells him Luca lives, but his mind tells him that it’s foolish hope, his guilt eating him alive.

Fate and magic change the course of their lives, and the two wolves long separated by the years find their paths intertwining. Though the gift of their reunion doesn’t come without price. Faced by the consequences of their growing love, and the goddess-forged bond between them, Kane and Ghost are besieged on all sides. Enemies are coming for their blood, and without the steadfast loyalty and love of family and friends, they may not be safe from the very people they fight to protect.

Book Review

Wow! What a phenomenal book! I can only quote Radiohead’s song, “Everything in its Right Place,” because everything—writing style, timing, plot, pace, characterization—comes together beautifully to make this one amazing, romantic, action-packed joyride of a read. The richness of the storytelling, its lush world building, plus its superb characterization refused to let me put the book down. Honestly, I devoured its 427 pages in less than three hours… and remember every exquisite detail. Yes, it’s that good; a must read.

Young child/pup Luca, grandson of the Black Pine Wolf Clan’s shaman, is believed to have drowned after mad scientists backed by a wealthy corporate family try to capture said shaman to harness his powers for themselves. These humans are working with a traitorous wolfkin who hates the heir of the Black Pine Clan, an exceptionally gifted alpha named Kane. The attempted kidnapping takes place at the annual gathering of the Northern Clans, during which twenty-four-year-old Kane first spies the five-year-old child/pup, Luca, with his grandfather at a storytelling. When the gathering turns into a massacre, Kane finds the clan shaman dying and Luca nowhere to be found. His failure to locate the child/pup has Kane dedicating his life to hunting down hunters of wolfkin, spurred on by the memory of the sassy lost pup.
Luca’s wounded grandfather uses his spirit form to locate the seriously injured Luca and despite his young age guides Luca’s change to his wolf form. Told to hide and wait for Kane, Luca does just that, until hunger drives him to meet a couple of human campers. Thinking him an orphan, the human couple takes him home to their wolf sanctuary. Renamed Ghost and raised as a wolf, Luca’s memories of being wolfkin fade, but he still remembers the name, Kane…he’s just not sure what it means.

I reiterate—this is a fantastic read! What drives the story is the marvelous, tension-ridden build-up to Kane and Luca meeting again. But I was not left wanting or waiting for that climatic moment to take place. Rather I got to revel in the sumptuous tale of Luca’s life among the humans. Luca’s “voice” and experiences, and his adopted parents’ views on his un-wolf-like behavior, which becomes increasingly apparent as he reaches adulthood, are wonderful. Luca is utterly captivating. To say I was completely charmed by this adorable pup who grows to be a gorgeous, gifted, and intelligent wolf, is putting it mildly. This author knows how to make me fall in love.

Kane’s story is equally appealing, and a thrilling take on the alpha male at his best. Simply put, Kane is HOT! Tall, dark, and handsome has never been given a better example than that of this potent, charismatic alpha wolf. He is to die for! Magically woven throughout Luca and Kane’s stories, the origin, politics, and rules of the wolfkin society are revealed via its sublime, personable supporting characters, many of whom I yearn to meet in the next book of this fantastic series.

This is hands down one of the best books I have read this year. Part of its secret to success may be that it is an amazingly, engrossing story, period. Add in its male/male romance and its scorching lovemaking scenes and it’s spectacular! I only lament the fact that I have to wait for the next book, but you know what…I’m going to go read Luca and Kane’s story again…and again. Run, do not walk to pick up a copy of this highly recommended read!

Thank you, SJ Himes, for sharing this very special clan of wolves…I look forward to book two!

“Mesmerizing, Heartwarming, and Magically Delicious!”
