Badly disfigured, Geoff lives alone in the woods with only his wolf as companion. It’s a solitary life, but one he is comfortable with. Or can the fairy look beyond the scars and see into Geoff’s heart?

Book Review

In a very wintry setting, this is a wonderful fairy tale about a human named Geoff, who doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of humankind, and a fairy named Mauve, who discovers there is more to his life than flitting about with other members of his species. Even though Geoff is the one who rescues Mauve from a physical injury, they both soon discover they have much to learn, and in that sense, end up rescuing each other.

Geoff is badly disfigured and has found his fellow humans to be less than accepting about his scars. But instead of turning bitter, he shrugs it off and goes to live in the forest. He is very close to nature and doesn’t need much; it is a good fit. Geoff is a very giving man, so when he finds a wounded fairy he rescues him without a second thought. In Mauve, Geoff finds, for the first time in his life, someone who looks beyond the scars, and that sets him free.  I loved how he blossoms in Mauve’s presence, how he opens up, and finds a man who appreciates all Geoff has to offer.

Mauve is a fairy who was out on his own, hit a tree when he was flying around, and now has a broken wing. Without Geoff’s help, he would have frozen to death. Mauve finds it a little difficult to get used to being around a human at first. Knowing most humans I can’t say I disagreed with him about being careful. But once Mauve understands what a great guy Geoff is, he opens up and begins to form a connection with the human that ends up being a lot stronger than they both expected.

If you like tales about supernatural beings interacting with humans, if you’re interested in reading about two men from very different backgrounds who get together and find each other fascinating, and if you’re looking for a read that is as sweet as it is hot, then you will probably like this wintry fairy tale as much as I did. I loved it when I first read it a long time ago, and I loved it just as much this time around.
