Book Blurb

Nathan Bridges hadn’t intended to settle down in his hometown of Porthkennack—he just ended up staying after saving the family business from ruin. The truth is, Nathan can’t stop himself from stepping in when problems arise. He’s a fixer, the man everyone turns to. But even fixers can’t solve everything.

When Nathan’s sister needs an organ transplant, it’s his stepbrother, Mack, who the family turns to as Rosie’s only potential living donor. Nathan’s curiosity about the stepbrother he’s never met turns to shock when he realises that Mack is his latest—and hottest ever—one-night stand.

Nathan and Mack agree to forget their single night together, but that’s easier said than done. When Mack moves in to Nathan’s place to recuperate after surgery, it’s not just the sexual tension between them that keeps growing. Against all the odds, and despite Mack’s wariness of intimacy, the two men grow close enough that Nathan begins to wonder what it would take to mend the rift that’s kept Mack and his father estranged for over a decade . . . and whether Mack might consider staying with Nathan in Porthkennack for good.

Book Review

“The most important tribute any human being can pay to a [song] a poem, or a piece of prose he or she really loves is to learn it by heart. Not by brain, by heart; the expression is vital.” ~ George Steiner

How would you handle it, if you had an earthshaking sexual encounter with someone whom you hope to hook up with again, except the next time you see that person, he's standing in your mother's living room—the long-lost stepbrother, Mac, whom you knew of but have never met. Awkward is putting it mildly, but that's exactly what happens to Nathan Bridges.

Mac has come on a very important mission. Prompted by a letter from his dad, Mac is hoping to save his half sister's life by donating one of his kidneys to her. Mac and his father, Nathan's stepfather, have not seen each other for years because of a big argument. The animosity between the two is horrendous, but the rest of the family is ready to welcome Mac with open arms. It's hard on Nathan that a member of his usually very supportive family is being such a jerk. Mac is a match. The operation is successful, but it is necessary for Mac to stay there while he recuperates. Because of their conflict, it would be too uncomfortable to stay in his dad's house with his half sister and stepmom, so Nathan asks Mac to stay with him. Mac is reluctant at first, but knows he's in a bind. Unable to work while he's getting better, Mac accepts Nathan's offer.

Even though Nathan and Mac agree to put their first encounter aside and try to be stepbrothers, it isn't working. They both try to be nonchalant about it, but the sexual tension is almost unbearable, particularly for Nathan. Despite their unusual situation, Nathan can't forget how Mac made him feel but has no clue as to how Mac feels and is afraid to bring it up. He tries to reason it away with the thought that Mac is not going to stay any longer than he has to, but has little success stopping his feelings. As the days pass, Nathan becomes morose, realizing that the person who lights up his life may soon be gone.

There are several themes in this story and Joanna has expertly handled all the situations with care and grace.   Mac and Nathan's accidental encounter is just one of many situations they find themselves in. There are Mac's feelings of insecurity and being unloved, Nathan's tendency to let everyone take advantage of him because he's so kind-hearted, and the conflict between Mac and his dad. The way Joanna solved that situation is amazing and a tribute to the power of love to heal all. Thanks, Joanna! I love Nathan and Mac!
