Andy is the eldest son of the ruling kelpie family. His two brothers have found their lovers, in accordance with an often-misunderstood prophecy. Now it's Andy's turn -- however he must first make peace with the fact that his match is a gender-switching air being.

Nubes, both king and queen simultaneously, seeks Andy only as an answer to the prophecy. Slowly, however, as respect and lust grow, both Andy and Nubes find out that they can no longer survive without one another.

Book Review

While the prophesy about which kelpie lord will be marrying which elemental prince has pretty much played out, there are still many questions about the many mythological creatures and their politics. This third book in the series answers quite a few of them, lots of back story is added, and a much clearer picture about what might come next surfaces. It was interesting to see familiar characters in a new light as the truth emerges, but the focus is on Andy, the oldest kelpie son, and Nubes, a mysterious zephyr prince who is both male and female.

Andy has been the most responsible son of the ruling kelpie family. He has always known his duty will be to marry the person he is assigned by his mother, but after seeing both his younger brothers find love by the time they exchanged vows, he was hoping the same will be true for him. What he finds is a much larger challenge, and not just because he is gay and has trouble dealing with the female side of Nubes – the one that is essential to their races’ procreation.

Nubes is in a similar position. He is ready to get married to the kelpie lord to ensure peace among the warring races, but he cannot see how he can love someone who can’t fly. Soaring through the air is a huge part of his life, and mating takes place in the air. Nubes is standoffish, lets nobody close, not even the consort he has had for twenty years, and even though he spends most of his time as a male, he needs his husband to accept both Nubes’s male and female form.

If you want to know where the kelpie lady’s political machinations lead, if you think that true love will find a way no matter what preconceptions and obstacles it encounters, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read that answers many of the questions from previous volumes, then you might like this drama-filled novella.
