Book Review

“Folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be.” ― Abraham Lincoln

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day this year, ‘The Leprechaun Next Door’ is a sweet, very entertaining story about finding happiness, defying the odds, and a touch of magic in everyday situations. Leprechauns are creatures of myth and folklore - a type of mischievous fairy with Irish roots who have a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. If captured by a human they sometimes grant three wishes in exchange for their freedom. They are also seen as symbols of luck, or so some legends go. The author has taken all these elements and woven them into a modern-day fairy tale with some very funny and some very touching moments. If you like to think that wishes have power, then this is a great story for you.

Devon is an IT specialist who is completely out of luck. Losing your job, your cheating boyfriend, and your apartment all in one week is a little much for anyone but, as Devon sets out to prove, it might just be what he needs for a new beginning. He has no idea how this is going to happen, no intention to fall in love ever again, and he is much too nice for his own good – even to the cheating ex! Devon has lots of wishes – but they all have consequences and picking the right ones is not an easy task!

The leprechaun in this particular story is called Johnny, lives a pretty normal life, and has no intention of making things difficult for his cute but very out-of-luck neighbor, Devon. He has rules he needs to follow though, so things are not as easy as he might hope. Johnny reveals his true nature to Devon fairly quickly, and I thought that was interesting because it turns the focus of the story to the dynamics between Johnny and Devon on a more personal level, rather than making the supernatural element the center of attention. It made the quickly blossoming romance even cuter, as far as I am concerned!

If you like your romances with a touch of magic and a supernatural element, if you think a young man who is totally out of luck and a traditional bringer of luck are a good match, and if you’re looking for a read that is as much about happiness and hope as it is about understanding the consequences of your actions, then you will probably like this novel.
