About Me

This is Danny, he is a very nice person and he is very funny, but I think he is lonely. He helped me when my mom wanted to sell me to a reality show and now I live with him and I wanted to do something back for him so I want to find someone for him, because he has only me and Bunny, that’s his dog, who is really big. And I’m 7 years old and Danny is 35, which is really old, but that doesn’t matter he looks younger. Miss Portwood, my teacher said I need to say what Danny likes to do and he likes to walk with Bunny and work out and play football with me and Bunny and he works also, I think he is a police officer or something, he has a really cool car! And he has a ring in his nipple, which I think is really ouch, but he says people like it. I don’t understand why but Danny says I need to be older but I’m already 7.

Hugs, Melissa

Photo Description:
A man stares at the camera, a hint of a smirk on his lips. His stubble-covered chin is tilted slightly down, and he has intense brown eyes. His black, gray, and white checkered shirt is open revealing his collarbone and a bit of chest. He wears a fisherman’s cap, hiding his hair. Only his ears peek out. Freckles cover his brow, cheeks, and chest. There’s an old scar on his left cheek.

This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group's "Love’s Landscapes" event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.

Book Review

When I read the “blurb”, really the dating profile designed by a seven-year-old girl for her guardian because she figures he is lonely, I knew I had to read this story. The whole idea of a Melissa, who is just a young kid, wanting to find a “friend” for Danny is just too cute. It sounded sweet, and funny, and with a kid’s perspective added to a possibly developing relationship, how could I resist? I am glad I didn’t try because this novella turned out to be everything I expected – and then some.

Melissa, and yes, she is an important character in this story, has been rescued by Danny from a mother who wanted to sell her for drugs. She doesn’t know this, Danny having told her she was going to be sold for a reality TV show (only slightly less awful), but to her, that seems unimportant. She has Danny now, and his dog Bunny, and nothing is wrong in her world. With the astute logic of a precocious child though, she notices that Danny doesn’t have a girlfriend. So she sets out to get him a date.

What she doesn’t know is that Danny, who is a cop, has begun dating the school librarian, Milo. Milo is shy, has never dated, and is scared to death Melissa will reject him. Even though he insists Danny keep quit about their dates, Danny doesn’t want to keep secrets from Melissa. He is ready to come out, never mind the consequences. One thing leads to another and Melissa finds out what’s been going on, doesn’t blink an eye, and includes Milo in their little family circle. Danny couldn’t be happier.

Milo is shy and withdrawn, but he comes out of his shell with Danny and Melissa. He has no idea what to expect and when Danny gets stressed at work and doesn’t reply to a text message for a whole week, poor Milo thinks they have broken up. Needless to say, it’s Melissa to the rescue…

If you like stories about men with kids trying to find a partner, if you enjoy reading about children taking an active role in a developing romance, and if you’re looking for an utterly sweet and very touching love story, then you will probably like this free novella. It definitely made me smile!
