Book Review

The author has certainly created an interesting world where the Helldorado Mongrels club is comprised of cursed shifters from back in the days of gold mining in southern Nevada. There are several different breeds, so to speak, of wolves and even descendants of the miners’ dogs that were abandoned. It can, occasionally, cause some confusion because there aren’t always clear explanations for some of the quirks in the story, but I tried to ignore that in favor of just enjoying this short, simple read.

Jarrod was introduced in book one as his brother Cameron and he came on the guided camping trip to try to help Cameron deal with his nightmares from all the years before when, as teenagers, both boys snuck off to investigate a supposedly haunted mine. Well, Cameron found Gabe, his mate and a wolf shifter, and Gabe explained everything to Cameron about the paranormal world and what Gabe is, but they didn’t tell Jarrod. Jarrod is pretty sure there’s a lot going on that he doesn’t know about but since he’s keeping his own secrets from his brother, Jarrod figures everything will come out in the wash eventually.

Tex was unfortunate enough to have come to Nevada during its gold rush and he got caught with the other shifters and mongrels when they were cursed. Now, he’s stuck as a member of the MC and even though it’s nice to feel like he belongs somewhere, a lot of the time he just wishes he could leave and never look back. Unfortunately, their leader, Inferno (cousin to Gabe from book one), is a genuine psychopath and nobody wants to get on his bad side. Of course, when Tex finds his mate, he might have to reevaluate a few of his choices.

I was disappointed at the similarities between Cameron’s story and Jarrod’s, along with the very abrupt ending. Tex and Jarrod got their happy ever after but I’m still concerned about Thumbs and Sloth. I think there’s a lot more going on with Sloth than I have seen yet and it’ll be interesting to see how his and Shaman’s tale turns out.
