Book Review

The Sapphire Ranch wolves and their humans are back for another suspense-filled installment of the human hunters versus shifter battle. The threat develops further as battle lines harden, and the mystery continues as to who is really behind the drive for total shifter elimination. Between a newly mated couple trying to find their feet, the pack at Sapphire Ranch beginning to define their own rules and vision for the future (beyond not being exterminated), and a shocking betrayal and kidnapping, this book certainly kept me glued to the pages. Ranchers Joe and Cal from book one are back, as are Sheriff Milo and his human mate Eli, and it was great to see them again. But the focus is Zeke, a human Cavalry operative, and Owen, the rogue wolf who was expelled from his birth pack for not following the rules and speaking out.

Owen may be a gamma who is supposed to be a hard worker who follows orders, but he also has his own ideas. His birth pack banished him as a consequence and he has lived on the run for six long years. When Zeke holds a gun to his head and takes him back to Sapphire Ranch, Owen is determined to run. Except – Zeke is his mate, and even Owen doesn’t think he can run from his mate. Then all hell breaks loose when Owen is kidnapped, and the only thing he wants is to survive.

Zeke is one of the strongest humans around; he knows about shifters (having worked as part of the Cavalry team protecting Cal and Joe), but he never imagined having one as a mate. Owen may have low self-esteem, but Zeke looks deeper than that and sees the real Owen. Zeke’s focus is building a life with Owen – if he can stop him from being killed and convince him to stay around. Zeke is as protective and possessive as any alpha wolf, and his growling made me smile.

If you like this series and want to find out how the guys at Sapphire Ranch are doing, if a human and a rogue wolf struggling for dominance in their relationship sound interesting, and if you’re looking for a read that is action-packed, suspenseful, and hot, then you will probably like this novella. I already look forward to the next installment.
