Reindeer Games Definition: activities to exclude outsiders

Industrial-art student Leif Caldwell and his best friend win tickets to the hottest party in town, the annual masquerade Christmas gala at the upmarket nightclub, Evoque. Not a gig they could ever afford to attend or buy costumes for, so Leif makes their masks. Given the holiday theme and the play on words, he makes a set of striking reindeer antlers and intends to have the night of his life.

Vintage Ridge's resident millionaire and owner of Evoque, Russ Quarrington, hates the holiday season because it reminds him of everything he's lost. All the money and success in the world can't fill the void in his heart, and this year he's particularly bereft. With the gala looming, his personal assistant insists Russ attends and that he wear a mask that offers anonymity, and hopefully find some festive cheer. Bored with the guys in town and tired of men only wanting him for his money, he reluctantly agrees.

But when Russ sees a mysterious man with a magnificent reindeer antlers and mask, he's instantly intrigued. Even when their masks are removed, Leif has no idea who Russ really is, and what Russ discovers is a man who understands him. And for the first time ever, a man who doesn't want what Russ has. This time, it's Russ who wants what Leif has, what money can't buy.

Russ and Leif are about to learn that sometimes Reindeer Games are the only games worth playing.

Book Review

“I can... buy everything in sight, But... I would still be cold at night. All the money in the world can't buy the thing not found on a shelf and so I just continue on day after lonely day by myself. All the money in the world can't buy me the one thing I most desire... someone to stay right by my side and stoke my heart's fire.” ~ Michelle (Can’t Buy Me Love)

Leif Caldwell, of ‘Reindeer Games’ by N.R. Walker, and his best friend, Jamie, normally would not be attending something as high-society as the annual Christmas party given by local millionaire, Russ Quarrington, but the tickets Leif won allow them to be able to attend.

Russ Quarrington is not looking forward to the gala or, for that matter, the Christmas season at all. Seeing how depressed Russ is, his personal assistant, Caleb, suggests going somewhere that won’t remind him as much about how lonely he is during the Christmas season. Russ decides that is a good idea and plans to do so, but, before he can go, Russ feels obligated to attend the gala. Since it is a costume ball, his assistant also talks him into going in costume, because that way Russ can be anonymous and have a better time than he would normally have. The night of the gala, Russ lives to regret his decision when he sees his costume, that is, to say the least, way over the top. Russ thinks he looks ridiculous, but Caleb insists that he is hot!  As ridiculous as he feels, Russ is beginning to appreciate his newfound freedom when he notices a tall man whose costume includes reindeer antlers. Russ decides that he wants to get to know this “reindeer” better.

Leif is attracted to the sexy man who looks like a character from the game 'Assassin's Creed’ and is pleasantly surprised when the mystery man approaches him. After some prompting from Caleb and Jamie, they pair up leaving Russ and Leif alone. After a night of flirting, drinking, and dancing, they go outside and unmask. Russ is relieved when he realizes that Leif doesn’t recognize him. For the first time in a long time, Russ has found someone he wants to be with rather than someone who wants to be with him for what he can do for them. It’s absolutely refreshing; it gives Russ hope that he can have a real relationship with Leif.

The story is hot and sexy, but it also has a deeper element to it. Russ and Leif are interested in getting to know each other on another level besides physical. As they share their interests and passions, they find that, social status aside, they have more in common than they would have thought. Thanks, N.R., for a great holiday story.
