A second chance born of love.

Pat Corrigan and Edgerton “Edge” Winters were ready to start a family—or so Pat thought. At the last minute, Edge got cold feet and fled. Pat didn’t bother telling him the conception had already gone through and little Emma was on her way. He didn’t want a relationship based on obligation. He’d rather raise his daughter on his own.

Nine years later, Emma and her Poppy are doing fine. Edge isn’t. He realizes what he threw away by leaving, and he’s back to turn his life around and reclaim his family. It’ll take a lot to prove to Pat that he’s a new man, and even if Edge succeeds, the secret Pat has hidden for years might shatter their dreams all over again.

Book Review

Second chances stories are one of my favorite tropes to read, and Poppy’s Secret is an excellent specimen of this genre, if you ask me. Pat and Edge loved each other a lot, but were at very different points in their lives nine years ago. Pat wanted a family and thought Edge wanted the same thing. Edge wanted Pat and to spread his wings – and got cold feet when he had to choose one or the other. Now they meet again, and suddenly they have not only their personal pasts to deal with but the fact that Pat has a daughter, a huge secret, and no idea if he is ready to open his heart to Edge a second time. Their struggle is real, emotions fly high, and the drama – family and otherwise – had me eagerly turning the pages.
Pat made the decision to have and raise the daughter he had planned with Edge on his own. He thought he was doing the right thing at the time – after all, Edge was ready to leave and Pat didn’t think “guilting” him into staying would work. Now that Edge is back and seems interested in Pat, daughter or no daughter, Pat faces a real dilemma. Initially his hurt feelings are stronger than any consideration of what might be the right thing to do, but as he begins to get to know Edge again and they still get along extremely well, Pat begins to reconsider.

Edge has changed over the years. Not all of his dreams worked out the way he hoped they would, he is an artist looking for a vision, and his feelings for Pat are still as strong as ever. He also likes Emma and gets along with her amazingly well. The big question for him is whether he is ready for a family and whether he can deal with the revelation that Pat has for him – and it’s a doozy!

If you like seeing guys get a second chance at happiness, if family drama and revelations about the past are your thing, and if you’re looking for an emotional read with a cute kid, a devoted dad, and a man who needs to decide what he wants – once and for all – then you will probably like this novel.
