Book Review

“If you feel like you're falling apart, fall into my arms. I promise I will catch every little piece of you and I promise I will always love your brokenness.” ~ Anita Krizzan

Everyone should have someone in their lives like Dallas, of ‘Pieces of Me’ by N.R. Walker. As Justin recovers from his accident, Dallas is right there, nurturing, gently encouraging, and loving Justin as hard as he can. He never loses patience or pushes too hard. He is incredibly perceptive, knowing when Justin is tired even before he knows it himself. At the same time, Dallas is emotionally and physically available to Justin wherever he is at the moment, whether it’s just sitting beside him watching TV or planning outings that will enrich Justin’s life but not be overly taxing. He is just... there. Dallas realizes what a unique position he is in with Justin and is determined to stick it out, having faith that eventually Justin will either fall in love with him again or remember what they had.

Justin may not remember the last five years of his life, but it doesn’t take long to figure out why he has spent them with Dallas. Fortunately, memories are beginning to come back to him in bits and pieces but he is not always sure if they are dreams or real memories. It’s frustrating and he somehow wonders how Dallas can be so understanding. It’s almost surreal how he seems content to just wait for him to remember. He is almost too perfect. Even with very few memories in place, Justin can feel himself falling in love with Dallas all over again. They start to embrace and kiss each other, but one thing that Justin hasn’t even considered is having sex. He has seen the pictures of them together in an intimate pose, but, with his brain damage, his mind hasn’t connected the dots. When someone brings it up, Justin’s reaction is swift and brutal. Suddenly, he realizes what a strain he must be putting on Dallas with their lack of intimacy and falls into a deep depression. When Dallas realizes what is wrong, he reassures Justin that there is much more to a relationship than sex. He tells Justin that he’s not ready for that and, if he never is again, Dallas is merely grateful that Justin is with him.

‘Pieces of Me’, like the first book in this series ‘Pieces of Us’, is a heartbreakingly beautiful story. It made me sad with every setback and thrilled with each victory, as Justin struggles to get his mind and his life back. My emotions ran all over the place as I read about these two amazing men and their incredible love and dedication to each other. I can hardly wait for the next book. Thanks, N.R., for the heartache and the tears. It’s nice to know that whatever happens between Justin and Dallas, they will have a happy ending.
