Ancient Tahitian wizard Konu has settled into daily life in Waikiki, Hawaii. Entrusted with a sacred mission to bring healing and hope to the islands, he begins to grieve his past more and more. Ripped away five hundred years ago from his lover, Loho, he has found a new relationship with Jason, who runs a local homeless shelter. But things are not easy. Jason is stressed, busy and not easy to connect with.

Things take a strange turn when Konu finds himself in old Waikiki as it was five hundred years ago. There is Loho waiting for him. Konu wants nothing more than to be in his lover’s arms, but he loves Jason, too. Then a young girl vanishes, having followed Konu into the mystical realm. Her disappearance causes a great spiritual catastrophe only Konu can avert, but how does he get back inside those beautiful, brilliant, peridot dreams?

Book Review

The first book in this series (A Wizard in Waikiki) set the scene for the story of Tahitian wizard Konu making the transition from old Hawaii to the modern world. This second book colors in a lot of the missing parts and adds details that make both Konu and his new lover, Jason, come more and more alive for me.

The problem of being torn out of one time to be confronted with a totally new and different way of life and the emotional distress this causes Konu was heart wrenching. His loneliness and need to find a new balance came through loud and clear. He is driven to heal others, yet he needs so much help and healing himself. I loved his selfless approach to life, but at the same time wanted to tell him not to forget about himself. How much use can he be to anyone if he doesn’t have the energy to do what he was sent to do? It became clear to me that the Wizard Stones can be cruel masters.

Jason starts to become less of an unknown. He loves Konu, but his idea of a relationship clashes with Konu’s experience and expectations. When push comes to shove, though, it becomes clear that he is as affected as Konu. Jason’s way of helping people may be different, but he is just as determined to do what is right. When they join forces – watch out!

I love how Konu and Jason develop a closer understanding of each other, how their love grows and flourishes. If you like stories with a wonderful mix of a mysterious past, real problems that can only be solved using magic and intense love between two men who discover they mean much more to each other than originally expected, you will love this book. I certainly did!
