Book Blurb

Unassuming music major Brent Callahan has the crush of a lifetime on frat boy George Cortner. When the opportunity to offer George a ride home for the holidays crops up, Brent has to dig deep for the nerve to seize it. He’d been planning on hanging around campus for Christmas, but George doesn’t need to know that.

They’re on the road before Brent’s even sure he’ll be able to keep his hands to himself with George in such close quarters. Not that George has asked him to ...

Book Review

A music major and a rugby player are a nice variation on the nerd/jock theme – except these two don’t really fulfill the “requirements” for the stereotype in every single way. Or rather, they do so in unexpected ways that had me smiling as I got to know Brent and George. Their Christmastime adventure is as unconventional as the two of them, and I really had fun reading it.

Brent is of Vietnamese descent and was adopted and brought to the US as a baby, regularly getting questioned about his race and “why his brother and parents are white”. Brent plays the piano, is openly gay, and has a serious crush on George. Brent is also afraid of telling George how he feels, partly because he is shy and mostly because he fears getting beaten up. When he runs into George over a meal just before Christmas, everyone else already having left, they end up sharing a table.

Their discussion, and the shared ride home that follows, sounds pretty normal on the face of it, but nothing could be further from the truth. Misunderstandings and assumptions abound, and as the truth is slowly revealed during their six-hour drive toward home, Brent has to face the fact that not everything he believes is necessarily true… in more than one respect.

If you like your Christmas stories with a touch of humor and a lot of new adult confusion, if you want to find out more about two young men who defy expectations, and if you’re looking for a sweet read with lots of funny episodes (and a few daring moments), then you will probably like this novella.
