Deaf since childhood, Sebastian Armitage had a promising musical future until his dreams were shattered when he transformed at twelve years old. In a world where enhanced humans are terrorized and imprisoned, his life shrinks around him even more as he suffers the torment of his father’s experimental research to enable him to hear.

Gray Darling—struggling with the scars left by his experience in Afghanistan—agrees to provide short-term personal protection when anonymous threats escalate into assault on those closest to Seb.

As the lines between protection and attraction blur, Gray and Seb can’t ignore the intense feelings drawing them together. But secrets and betrayals might prove deadly, unless Gray is willing to risk it all. And Seb must find the strength to make his own future and sing his own song….

Book Review

“What are his enhanced abilities?”
“None that we can see. He has no abilities that anyone is aware of. The father was quite clear on that.”
“No abilities?” Gray repeated doubtfully.
“They’re not all Superman.”

I think the idea of writing individual, standalone books within the ‘Enhanced World’ but removed from the FBI slash human partners group is an excellent idea as, at least for me, it gives me a much richer view of the world and the Enhanceds who live in it. Of course, the blurb didn’t hurt as I found Seb and Gray to be an interesting match, and I was eager to read their story.

I truly couldn’t figure out whether Seb’s dad was so incredibly worried about his son’s safety because he loves him or because Seb is the key to testing the new cochlear implants his dad designed. When Seb’s secret, so to speak, is exposed to Gray inadvertently, it reveals possible new reasons as to why someone might want Seb hurt. On a bit of a side note, I really adored how Gray started sharing his own alternative medical treatments with Seb in order to help alleviate Seb’s migraine and vertigo problems that he has suffered from for years. Gray’s knowledge is certainly hard-won from his own recovery after a military disaster and I found their workouts and diet changes to be fun. I was as devastated as Seb, however, when he finally realized (and accepted) how his father really felt and where his motivations lay.

This was more exciting and suspenseful than I had expected, and that just thrilled me to no end! I loved the way the author wrote these two men with their vulnerabilities that didn’t make them weak no matter what they thought about themselves. I was a little disappointed at the way the last quarter of the book went very quickly and I felt as if I missed out on some things. I did like the resolution with Seb’s dad and the love between Gray and Seb was very tender and sweet. Overall, I definitely enjoyed this first venture into the Enhanced world outside of the FBI team in Florida and I’m looking forward to more standalones.
