The Forever Vampire saga continues…

In the aftermath of unspeakable slaughter, Robbie and Colt have escaped to the wilds of Alaska to face their immortal future. Things aren't so certain for their sworn enemies, Dylan and Issa, Matarian soldiers sworn to hunt them down and slaughter them.

Dylan is poised to begin his first vampire hunt and wants Issa as his partner, but Issa is far more concerned with finding his brother and tracking down the blond boy who nearly died on the battlefield. The entire cast from book one reunites in this thrilling continuation of their story, joined by a host of new faces--friends and foes--whose lives somehow weave together as they cross paths in their efforts to battle evil and attain their own happiness. Humans, Shifters, Daywalkers, and Purebloods confront each other with the guidance of three enigmatic sisters--one a Maenad, one a necromancer, and the other a human witch. Plot twists and surprises mark the paths of these diverse characters, forever fearless in their quest to cling to all they hold dear.

Book Review

“It is better by noble boldness to run the risk of being subject to half of the evils we anticipate than to remain in cowardly listlessness for fear of what might happen.” ~ Herodotus

What do you do when you've been specially trained for a job and find out that it's the last thing in the world you want to do? This is the dilemma facing Issa from 'Forever Fearless' by Jeff Erno. He's just finished his vampire slayer instruction in an elite school where every boy in his society yearns to go; but after his first and, hopefully, last encounter with hostilities, he's left sickened by his experience. Issa doesn't want his boyfriend, Dylan, to think he's a coward, but he knows that he can't put himself through the trauma which has left him with horrible anxiety and terrifying nightmares. There's got to be a better way and Issa intends to find it. After falling in love with Dylan, another student at the slayer academy, Issa decides to come out to his parents. Ibrahim, his father, is already furious at him about trying to call a truce in the battle Issa participated in, and takes it badly. His mother is incensed with her husband's reaction and tells him so. Issa's elder brother, Shadi, left home under similar circumstances; she doesn't want to lose another son to her husband's bigotry. Issa had been told that his brother, Shadi, was dead, but he knows he isn't because Issa saw him during the conflict Issa experienced.

In a desperate attempt to make sense of his life, Issa runs away to Dylan and explains what happened at home. Now that he knows Shadi is alive, Issa becomes obsessed with finding him, even though it means pursuing him into the lair of Raoul, an ancient, powerful, and demented vampire who rules by fear, intimidation, and torture. Issa is also dead set on finding the human boy, Robbie, who, in an ultimate act of love, dove in front of his lover, Colt, to save his life in battle. Issa wants a love like that and hopes he can have it with Dylan. He knows he can't do it alone; Issa hopes to convince Dylan of the importance of his quest.

Dylan is in love with Issa and would do almost anything for him; he decides to help Issa find his brother and Robbie. They know it will be dangerous, but not impossible, especially if they can enlist the assistance of others. Fortunately, they encounter some very powerful, resourceful people, all of whom are willing to join in the attempt to destroy Raoul and free Shadi, as well as a lot of others in the process. In their disparate crew are witches, daywalkers, shifters, and humans, each employing their own method of expertise to do battle with their common enemy.

Even though this is a dark, sometimes frightening story, there is not just one, but several happy endings in this timeless struggle between good and evil. Besides being entertaining, this story imparts several important messages, one being that there's nothing stronger than a mother's love for her child. Another is about the futility of bigotry; one can't hate someone they don't know and, hopefully, if given enough time, almost everyone can learn to live in harmony. Love is another strong theme as exemplified by Brendan and Richard; Cole and Robbie; and Issa and Dylan. There are also more surprises in store and some unexpected twists and turns.

This is the second book in the 'Forever Vampire' series, and I think it's even better than the first. The stories need to be read sequentially since most of the basic information is in the first story. Fans of the first book, will probably enjoy the second one even more; loose ends are tied up and characters and circumstances are more fully explained. I don't normally read stories about vampires and other preternatural creatures, but I must say that I am thoroughly enjoying this series and highly recommend it to anyone who likes vampires, shape shifters, witches, action, and adventure. I look forward to the next book in the series. Thanks, Jeff, for the intense adventure.
