What happens when a quiet boy with a secret falls for his best friend?

Finn has always kept people at arm’s length. Being quiet and shy doesn’t get you many friends outside your family, and it’s even harder when you’re running a spicy, secret side project.

But Gem might be the exception to the rule. The game designer is clever, self-deprecating, and appreciates Finn’s affection for all things nerdy. He's the one man who can find the real Finn… if Finn lets him in.

When Gem asks for Finn's help opening a new board game store, it brings the two of them closer than ever before. Soon things become complicated as lines of friendship blur between them, and Finn begins to worry Gem will find out his secret.

But maybe that wouldn’t be as bad as it seems. Maybe Gem already knows the secret Finn's keeping. All he has to do is convince Finn to share…

Book Review

“Don’t underestimate me. I know more than I say, think more than I speak, and notice more than you realize.” ~

Finn, of ‘Finding Finn’ by Charlie Novak, enjoys being with his friend, Gem; he is one of the few people who understand and accept him as he is. However, there is one part of Finn’s life that he has not shared with Gem or anyone else except his best friend, who initially encouraged him to pursue it. It’s a part of himself that he wants to keep to himself.

Lately, Gem has been discouraged. He is working part-time at a game store while waiting for the program he developed to take off, but it isn’t doing as well as he hoped. Seeing how distraught his friend is, Finn suggests that he rent a building and start a gaming business of his own. Gem likes the idea but has little confidence in his ability to succeed in the venture. However, at Finn's urging, they check out a building for rent. The building is smaller than Gem expected. Immediately, his excitement turns to pessimism, but Finn starts pointing out solutions to what Gem is seeing as negatives. There is a lot to be done before the place is ready. Gem can do a lot himself but knows that he will need professionals to make some of the necessary improvements. There's no way he will be ready for the proposed opening if he has to do it all himself. He is surprised yet pleased when Finn offers to help.

Finn has had a crush on Gem for a while, but since he has issues opening up to people, he has very few friends; Finn doesn't want to take a chance on losing Gem if he doesn't return the affection. As they settle into a routine, it gives them more time together. Finn's feelings continue to grow, and, one night, he takes the plunge and kisses Gem, which leads to a hot session in the stock room. Gem is shocked, but since he has been having some "improper" feelings toward his friend, he is delighted at the same time. Finn shows Gem a dominant side of him that Gem would never have expected his quiet, shy friend to possess and learns that he likes it... a lot! They continue to explore this newfound aspect of their relationship until Gem confesses that he knows Finn's secret. The admission sets Finn into a tailspin. He runs out of the shop, leaving Gem to wonder what just happened!

I liked Gem and Finn but wanted to smack some sense into them. How could two men be so oblivious! The aggressive side of Finn's nature added an atypical element that gave the story more depth. Although I am sure some readers will appreciate it, the language and control used in their sexual couplings, for me, were uncomfortable rather than enjoyable. It was good to visit with Eli and the rest of the gang. Thanks, Charlie, I look forward to the next tale in the series.
