Book Blurb

When Rallus quits his FBI job and moves to the mountain town of Fawnskin, California, to get away from it all, he has no clue that rural life will mean falling in love with another mysterious newcomer. He falls hard and fast for Knox Baylor, who’s taken an unusual job as a shomerim, a corpse watcher at a funeral home.

For Knox, the job should be easy money, even if the hours are long...except that he falls asleep on the job and accidentally releases Mr. Harold Hoxheimer’s angry spirit, or dybbuk, which starts creating unholy havoc in Fawnskin.

Harold opens all the secret wounds festering under Fawnskin’s pretty, postcard exterior. Fawnskin is home to a fake fortune teller who blackmails residents but hides an even more sinister secret. And why do individuals keep dying in the old people’s home? Rallus barely has time to deal with these problems when a grizzly murder takes place and a small boy is abducted.

As they investigate, Rallus and Knox find that nothing is what it seems in this once-quiet town with the warm and fuzzy name...everybody has a secret, and some are willing to go to deadly lengths to keep them.

How can they keep Mr. Hoxheimer’s vengeful dybbuk from jumping from one host body to the next? What exactly does he want? And can Rallus and Knox defeat the growing evil with true love?

Book Review

This book has an amazing set of characters, an interesting setting, and the new-to-me concept of a "dybbuk". I do enjoy a good paranormal mystery with an entity whose background and details I am not quite sure of. And even on the second reading, I found the slowly unfolding details very interesting and the humor definitely entertaining. Oh, and did I mention that the two main characters, Rallus and Knox, are very hot?

Rallus is ex-FBI and expects a quiet mountain town when he moves to Fawnskin. Knox has taken a job as a shommerin (or corpse watcher) just to try to make ends meet. Neither of them expect to fall for each other. Nobody expects Knox to fall asleep on the job and for the dead man's angry spirit to create chaos in the seemingly quiet little town. A fake fortune teller, mysterious deaths in the old-people's home, a grisly murder, and the abduction of a small boy add to the confusion.

I have read a few more mysteries and ghost stories in the last few years than when I originally reviewed this story. But I would not say, by any stretch of the imagination, that I'm a connoisseur of ghost stories. Yet - this one with its high levels of tension and suspense, the uncertainty of what was going to happen next, and the determination both Rallus and Knox show to solve the mystery had me intrigued.

If you like unusual paranormal tales and are looking for one full of surprises, then you will probably like this novella. I'm very much looking forward to the sequel again!
