Book Review

Is it wrong to do something morally ambiguous if you’re doing it to save the life of another? This is the dilemma Jake has found himself in as he works the dating sites, conning men out of cash as he strings them along but using the cash to pay his brother’s hospital bills. Jake will do anything to save Nate and working double shifts at the diner isn’t enough, so when he stumbled upon this hustle, Jake tucked his shame away and plays the game “dating” up to four or five men at a time. But, DarkAndMysterious032 is different and Jake doesn’t want to keep the charade going, and he doesn’t want to hurt this man.

“Dark was only one of his marks, forbidden fruit and nothing more. Usually, Jake would work his latest victim and try to get him to send over more cash, but his business with Dark was done. Besides, what did a lonely woodsman have to offer? Jake had done enough damage, and it would continue to gut his soul if he continued playing with Dark like this.”

Dark is a black dragon shifter, a recluse, and has difficulty controlling his beast and his emotions. So when he suspects “Tom” might be making a fool out of him, Dark employs his brother, Smoke’s, help with the technology to locate his real identity and location. There aren’t a lot of dragon shifters left alive in the world and most people believe them to be extinct. Unlike other shifters, dragons don’t live in packs or group units, much preferring to be alone and staying away from other dragons as being too close in proximity causes nothing but dominance fighting. Dark and Smoke live relatively close as they are brothers but even with the familial tie too much time spent near each other and they’ll begin to fight.

Jake is stunned when Dark abducts him to his mountaintop cabin wanting to know more about why Jake did what he did. Jake doesn’t know he’s Dark’s mate but Dark is more than aware of that fact and he just needs to get Jake to trust him before he reveals his feelings. Alone with Dark, surrounded by nature, quiet, and peace, Jake understands what his decision must be in terms of Nate. It’s easier to accept now that he and Dark have mated and Jake isn’t so alone in the world.

This is a very good beginning to a new series although I truly wish it had been longer as, in my opinion, there was much more that could have occurred between Jake and Dark. However, I still enjoyed their story and look forward to the next where I hope there’s more “geekiness” to be found as I truly love those types of characters.
