When werewolf Maicoh is ejected from his wolf pack in the Four Corners area of Colorado, he travels north, crossing the river into the canyon that he thinks is Glenwood Springs. He needs some time to recover, be at peace and think. What he gets is a whole bunch of shifters, an alternate reality and his ex-lover Ashkii.

Ash had fled the pack years before, knowing he would never be anything but their punching bag, as an Omega wolf the pack found him to be a less than perfect mate for Mai. Now Mai is in his territory and Ash has to decide if he’ll let Mai back into his life and if he thinks Mai is worth fighting for once the pack decides they want Mai back.

Book Review

Shifters finding refuge in an alternate reality? Count me in! Wolves fighting for position in a pack is to be expected, but first Ash, then Mai, finding a new home in an interesting parallel dimension is pretty creative. And even better, it’s not just wolves who get together in Glen Wood, it is a whole bunch of shifters of all kinds. More reminiscent of some of the Native American myths I am familiar with this story’s world is one of peaceful coexistence and respect for nature. This is definitely a fresh look at shifter lore, and I was happy to discover that mating and hot loving is still very much part of it all.

Maicoh/Mai has fought hard for a position in his pack, and has given up a lot to get there. Ash may have run years ago, when their only choice would have been to fight for dominance, but Mai stuck it out. And for what? When he discovers they want him to produce babies for the pack he decides enough is enough. He knows Ash is his mate and that will never change. But when he actually finds him, as if by coincidence – or fate, Mai is stunned. Not for long though. Seeing Ash again brings back a lot of memories, and a mate is a mate, right?

Ashkii/Ash was never a fighter. The whole idea of having to hurt and maybe kill for a position in the pack disgusts him, and when Mai is told to choose between Ash and the pack, Ash knows it is time to go. He is more of an earth-bound shifter, close to nature, and more than a little artistic. A hippie werewolf, which made me smile. But it suits him. When Mai turns up, the old longing returns, but Ash is hesitant to trust again. He knows he cannot survive another separation. Mai is it for him though, so what choice does he have?

If you like shifter stories set in the context of an entire mythology, if you enjoy reading about men who try to fight who they are, only to discover there is no escaping their destiny, and if you’re looking for a read that is funny, sweet, and very hot, then you will  probably like this novella.
