After losing his husband, David, to a tragic accident the previous year, Russ doesn’t feel much like celebrating the upcoming holidays. When his daughter unexpectedly asks for one of David’s cookie recipes, Russ makes a decision that lands him in a baking class. After a few mishaps with an inept partner, Russ is ready to give up, but then the teacher, Amos, offers private lessons to help him recreate David’s smorgasbord of holiday treats. Somewhere along the way, Russ develops an attraction to the younger man, but is he ready to move on and let Amos in?

Book Review

What begins as a pretty sad story of Russ having to deal with the first Christmas after losing his husband, turns into a tale full of hope and an unexpected way forward not only for Russ, but also for his teenage kids. And it’s all due to the Christmas cookies Russ does not want anyone else to make… Because, you see, Russ is not any sort of a talent in the baking department, so he ends up taking a class which is not that much of a success. Until, that is, the teacher offers him private lessons and that opens up a whole new avenue of possibilities – ones that Russ is not even sure he is ready to accept.

Russ is a plumber and heating specialist, and a pretty handy guy to have around when one of those vital home systems breaks down – but baking is not his thing. I had to laugh more than once as he made his various attempts with very little success – he reminded me so much of myself! Amos is a very enthusiastic baker, teaches the class Russ ends up taking, and is a disaster where fixing his home is concerned. Sounds like a match made in heaven, right?

Unfortunately things are not as easy as they seem, and not just because Russ is having a really difficult time getting used to doing all the holiday stuff without his husband. His kids try to help, and his ex-wife (whom Russ is still friends with) does her best, but her being a matchmaker for Russ is not what he needs, In the end, it is up to Russ to learn how to deal with “replacing” his husband, and it is not an easy process. It leads to misunderstandings, bad feelings, and both men are ready to give up more than once – but something keeps pulling them back together.

If you enjoy Christmas stories with some tough and very real issues, if you want to watch two men battle out their differences in more than one area, and if you’re looking for a read with drama, lots of back-and-forth, deep emotions, and unexpected passion, then you might like this novella.
