The last thing Wilhelm expects to find at Michaels, three days before Christmas and in search of a gift to make for his niece, is one of Santa’s elves—a cute one with a wicked, inappropriate sense of humor and a kinky streak. Alabastair may have been kicked out of Santa’s village, but he’s still a Christmas expert. And he’s determined to give Wilhelm and his family the best holiday he can.

With only two days to turn the Grinch’s house into a Christmassy wonderland, they have a lot on their plate. Among the glitter and the cheer, Wilhelm and Alabastair might find more than just the holiday’s magic. But will it be enough to keep Alabastair in Wilhelm’s bed and life when the North Pole calls him back?

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2019 Advent Calendar "Homemade for the Holidays."

Book Review

Wilhelm, of ‘An Elf for Myself’ by Emy Calriel, is distressed that his sister has tricked him into celebrating Christmas this year, even though she knows he hates the holiday. Even worse, she tells him that the presents they give each other, have must be homemade.

As Wilhelm stresses over what materials to get, he happens along a dejected looking young man, Alabastair, he stops to see if he can help him. Alabastair tells him he is an elf who has been banished from the North Pole and Wilhelm isn’t sure what to think, but when Alabastair offers to help him get his supplies, he readily agrees. After shopping, Wilhelm thanks Alabastair. He starts to leave but realizes that Alabastair has nowhere to stay. He feels sorry for him and invites Alabastair to go home with him.

When they get there, Alabastair is appalled that Wilhelm has no decorations, not even a tree! He convinces Wilhelm that his niece will be horribly disappointed if the house isn’t decorated. Duly chastised, Wilhelm goes with the elf to buy the things necessary to make his home more festive. During Alabastair’s stay with Wilhelm they get closer they get. When Santa’s “representatives” come to for Alabastair, he doesn’t want to leave, but knows that he has to if he ever wants to see his family again.

I really liked the way Alabastair helped Wilhelm face and overcome his trauma about the holiday to reclaim his Christmas spirit. Alabastair’s over-the-top personality and snarky comments, added a special quality to the story. Thank you, Emy, for your delightful Advent tale.
