Samoyed shifter Matt feels down when his neighbor Chase witnesses his feline boyfriend of two years break up with him. However, Chase is genuinely concerned and wants to cheer Matt up. He invites Matt over to his house. Once there, Matt can hardly wait to find out what kind of shifter Chase really is. After an intriguing kiss, Matt is invited for a romp through the nearby forest reserve in his dog skin, and it's here that he finally gets to see Chase's shifter form.

The last few days before Christmas can be stressful, and even as dog shifter Matt realizes his relationship with cat shifter Jason may be a bit iffy, the man breaks up with him. In a way Matt has always feared they wouldn’t stay together forever – they are too different. And he has sort of seen it coming, except he never wanted to believe what he saw.
Matt takes it pretty well, even though he ends up feeling very lonely. But then, there is the mystery of his neighbor Chase to keep him busy. The man also keeps him guessing, since he cannot figure out what type of shifter he is. Not that it really matters, he is extremely attracted to the guy.
Chase is strong, kind, and somewhat mysterious. He is also clearly interested in Matt, and when he invites him over for a beer, a while after the breakup, he is ready to reveal more about himself. They talk about his job, before he teases Matt outside to show him what he shifts into.
If you like short stories about shifters, and if you prefer a bit of mystery over immediate jump-between-the-sheets-action, you will probably like this short story.
