Author Interviews

Devon Rhodes talks about Pride and Joey on 13-September-2016

Author's Interview

Thanks for having me on Rainbow Book Reviews! I’ve been around as an author long enough that I have a few books that I consider my “older stories”, and Pride and Joey is one such title for me. It first came out as a short story several years ago, and I always intended to go back and write more in that world. Yet sometimes writers get caught up in new ideas and directions and so Pride and Joey sat alone as a solo work for a while.

However, a few fans kept after me for more, especially curious about what happened with Brady. Anyone who’s read me before knows that I tend to invest time into my secondary characters, to the point where they almost beg for their own story to be told. And sometime my secondaries do try to steal the show, but most of the time I like to think I’m successful in reining them in. Brady turned out to be a very popular secondary character who had his fans and his own voice, so this year I finally sat down to do justice to his story and wrote Pride Before the Fall, which will come out next month.
As I was doing that, though, I found there were some scenes I wanted to tweak or expand in the first book (of course!). One of the things that re-releasing an older story gives an author the opportunity to do is to add on to the story, or perhaps even write what ended up trimmed earlier—in many cases, short stories are written with specific limits imposed by the publisher to make them consistent for a collection. So once I finished the sequel, I started to go back through Pride and Joey and updated it, as well as adding some scenes to take it into novella range. I decided not only to add to Vance and Joey’s story, but I was also able to give readers a bit more information on the pride politics that led to Joey’s kidnapping and even show a bit of Joey and his life before it happened.

The twists and turns of how Joey was put on a path to meet Vance and change his entire pride were a lot of fun to conceive of in the first place, and now that I’ve had a chance to revamp the book, they were even more fun to revisit. If you’ve read Pride and Joey before, I hope you like the extra bits I’ve added. The new cover is great too! And if this is a new book for you, enjoy Vance and Joey’s story, and come back for Brady’s in less than a month!

Happy reading!

Vance thought his pride meant everything to him…until fate sent Joey into his lair and into his heart.

Vance has grown up the odd one out in a macho and very insular pride of lion shifters. Differences like enjoying the cool fall weather are bad enough—his pridemates would kill him if they learned he was gay. Still, his pride is all he knows. He’s never even met a shifter of another type…until he discovers an unconscious cougar male in his lair.

Joey is on the run and wants to keep Vance at arm’s length, especially since someone very close to the lion is at the root of all his troubles. But there is something irresistible about Vance, something that has Joey wanting more than he has ever dared to dream.

When their lives are threatened, Joey must choose whether to sacrifice himself, or try to live and keep Vance close…for the very short remainder of his life.
